"There was an app for that": I've been informed by a Google Glass user that The vOICe for Android no longer runs as a side-loaded app on Glass. It reportedly just shows a black screen, without any sound. I cannot think of a reason other than recent changes to the Glass firmware. If anyone has an idea that could lead to a fix I would much appreciate it! http://www.seeingwithsound.com/android.htm

Peter Meijer, contact Jenny Murphy and see if she has any ideas of what could be happening.
ReplyDeleteJenny is no longer with the Glass team.
ReplyDeleteAllen Firstenberg I thought she was leaving in a few weeks. Has she already left?
ReplyDeleteWhat a pain. It's happened to us also with apps that we get working and then... Wham. Did glass update again?
ReplyDeleteNo, Jenny is no longer with Google.
ReplyDeleteIn general, if you run into issues like this where something changed, its often best to post the problem on StackOverflow. The DevRel team (and some engineers) monitor there.
If you can, posting a logcat to see if there is anything unusual there, as well as as many details as possible.
Google Glass is not yet for sale in The Netherlands, so for the time being I need to rely on user reports and cannot provide the level of debug detail that is needed by both Google and myself to effectively home in on what is now broken. Given that The vOICe runs on numerous Android phones and tablets, TV sticks and an Android watch phone (ZGPAX S5), as well as under an emulator approximating Google Glass properties minus Glass extensions, it looks like Google needs to work on better maintaining compatibility of Glass with regular Android devices. However, at the same time I cannot prove that there is not some mistake on my side. Looking through the Google Glass issue tracker does remind me of the early days of Android in late 2008, early 2009, when getting live media processing to work on Android devices required many workarounds plus some trial and error to find out what worked.
ReplyDeleteWondering if
ReplyDeleteadb logcat -b main > mainBuffer.txt
adb logcat -b events > eventsBuffer.txt
would yield any useful information in investigating situations like this.
Problem solved with version 1.77 of The vOICe for Android! http://www.seeingwithsound.com/android.htm Runs on Google Glass again.
